Naomi Klein does not trust Hillary Clinton on addressing “the defining issue of our time,” climate change.
The prominent Canadian journalist, activist and author told Al Jazeera’s Mehdi Hasan this week that the US Democratic presidential frontrunner never showed her commitment to tackling the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century.
“I don’t trust her because, as Secretary of State, when she had a huge megaphone to make this an issue, to show that she understands the connections between human security and climate, she didn’t use the megaphone,” said Klein, the author of the bestselling book, “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate.”
Whoever succeeds Barack Obama as the next US president will inherit the challenge of leading the global fight against climate change. As for the reward, the Lancet says“tackling climate change could be the greatest global health opportunity of the 21st century.”
During last year’s Paris Agreement, the US, Canada and other countries agreed to limit global temperatures to “well below 2” degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. They committed to limiting the temperatures to within 1.5 degrees.
According to environmentalist David Suzuki, the “Paris Agreement, in process and outcome, is a dramatic improvement — a product of the growing urgency to act on the defining issue of our time. It’s the first universal accord to spell out ways to confront climate change, with Canada and other industrialized nations required to transition from fossil fuels to 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050 and developing nations by about 2080.
Leading climate activists declared the Paris agreement the “end of the era of fossil fuels.”
In the Al Jazeera video, Klein says Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s rival for Democratic nomination, is a “significantly better candidate”.
